Dry Body Brushing

Our lymphatic system needs to be stimulated by movement and is an essential route to clear our waste products. Our bodies contain far more lymph than blood, yet the lymph is dependent upon outside forces for its circulation around the body – lymph has no heart to pump it. Therefore, it is prone to being sluggish which can increase cellulite, impact hormone balance and our immunity, and if we are not clearing waste through our lymphatics our skin can become congested.
Dry Body Brushing is a cleansing technique of Ayurvedic medicine (a system of alternative healing that originated in India thousands of years ago). It is designed to stimulate the body from the outside in and cleanse our whole system.
Our skin is the largest organ of the body, it is estimated that one-third of our bodies daily impurities are excreted through our pores. Not only does our skin assist with elimination but we also absorb many essential nutrients through the pores including oxygen. Dry Body brushing helps exfoliate skin and remove dead skin cells that may be clogging pores interfering with waste elimination and also absorption of essential nutrients.
Benefits of Dry Brushing:
- Lymphatic Support – Most of our lymph vessels run just below the skin, dry body brushing helps stimulate the normal lymph flow and ultimately encourages waste clearance.
- Exfoliation – Dry body brushing helps shed dead skin cells and encourages new cell renewal, which results in smoother and brighter skin
- Reduces Cellulite – Though there isn’t much research available to back this up, regular dry brushing can greatly help to reduce cellulite.
- Boosts energy levels – Increasing lymphatic and blood circulation can increase energy levels by stimulating waste clearance and boosting delivery of nutrients to cells
- Feel good – Dry skin brushing rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin which can enhance mood and “feel good” brain chemicals
How to start adding dry body brushing into your daily routine;
- Make sure the fibres are all natural and avoid any synthetic materials
- Work in the direction of the lymphatic flow – Start at the toes, working up the foot in light, sweeping one directional movements
- Move up to the back of the thigh, working in long strokes out towards the buttocks
- Repeat on the other leg
- Brush lightly on stomach from waist to belly button on alternate sides. Then brush across the chest and around the breasts towards the heart
- Brush the front of the arms in long strokes towards the underarms
Dry brushing takes just a few minutes and is best done in the morning, as it wakes and warms you up!
